Conference + seminar programme

The 2-day Future City Forum + WaterfrontExpo conference + seminar programme aims to maximise delegate participation and the knowledge and value they gain from this event.

  • To achieve this, the conference programme will draw on the expertise of high profile participants and comprise 5 sessions as detailed below.
  • Sessions 1 - 4 feature case study presentations based on the real, practical experience of cities and organisations, not on theory.
  • Each of these case study sessions will be followed by expert-led seminars. Here, delegates will be able to explore and analyse, in depth and detail, the issues raised by the case studies and the lessons they offer for their towns, cities and projects.
  • In Session 5, delegates will come together to discuss and debate key issues raise earlier in the conference + seminar programme.

Day 1, Wednesday 24 November

SESSION 1: Funding and Finance, Regulation and legislation, Standards for assessing and comparing sustainability

  • Investigation of new and innovative funding vehicles for urban regeneration and development; the impact of low carbon and environmental regulations and legislation; and the standards and methodologies used and under development for assessing sustainability and comparing different projects.

SESSION 2: Retrofitting cities: Adapting and updating the existing infrastructure and buildings

  • Adapting and upgrading the existing infrastructure and built environment. In the UK, for example, new buildings add about 1% a year to the existing stock, but the other 99% of buildings are already built and produce 27% of all carbon emissions. As such, retrofitting is likely to be an increasingly important issue. Similarly, many cities and towns have ageing infrastructure rapidly approaching the end of its life, or is inefficient or poorly suited to current needs.
Day 2, Thursday 25 November

SESSION 3: Sustainable development and low carbon projects in the regeneration of the local economy

  • Analysis of case studies of new projects and how they address and contribute to economic, employment, and social needs and, at the same time, tackle environmental and low-carbon requirements.

SESSION 4: The waterfront as a catalyst for sustainable urban regeneration and development

  • A waterfront offers cities many opportunities for sustainable growth, including transportation, residential development, tourist development, and the redevelopment, regeneration and retrofitting of derelict sites and old buildings close to the city centre.

SESSION 5: Interactive Round Table Discussion + Debate Forum

  • This session will be chaired by a high profile expert and feature a panel comprising a number of the conference's high profile participants. It will bring together the key issues covered in the previous sessions, and enable delegates to state, discuss and debate their own views.

Networking Reception

All participants will be invited to attend the Networking Reception at the end of Day 1. This event promises to be a real cracker – organised in true theatrical style!

Site visits/Study tours Programme for Friday 26 November

On Friday 26 November there will be an optional FREE-to-DELEGATE programme of ‘whole-day’ Site visits/Study tours to experience some of London’s key regeneration projects. Details will be announced closer to the event.
